she sells seashells…

I found some beautiful beach-inspired jewelry that would look absolutely stunning on a seaside bride or her entourage of bridesmaids.

They Swing Swiftly Towards Happier Times

The Hamptons were faaaabulous daahhhhling!  Hopefully we spread the word about Funky Divas to a good number of people that day, but we have another chance this Saturday.  There is another fundraiser, this time sponsored by InStyle Magazine and hosted by Kelly Ripa so this one sounds extremely promising.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a large boost in clientele!

Yesterday my darling husby and I went to see 500 Days of Summer and it was just so sweet and romantic!  I absolutely love Zooey Deschanel and I love how in every movie she practically flaunts her own personal wardrobe.  What amazing vintage style!  I love the 50s housewife dresses, the high-waisted pants, the pinup pencil skirts.  And don’t even get me started on her perfectly coiffed retro hairstyle that looks great whether it’s down and flowing or up in a ponytail with a sweet little ribbon bow.  Get out of town.

Today Scottie arrived for a fun-filled ten day vacation.  We had coffee at Atlas, relaxed for a bit at home, had more coffee at Atlas, met up with Sasha for some Sugar Sweet Sunshine cupcakes, and now we’re relaxing a bit more before heading out for a night out on the town..or falling asleep before 10 pm.  Whatever.

hey, working girl!

I want to apologize for my absence from the blog world, our computer was having technical difficulties and we had to send it to get fixed. It came back with new parts…and new problems. After our third trip to the Apple store, our computer is as good as new (we hope!)

I also want to apologize for our hiatus from the Sugar Darling Vintage shop! Since we moved to New York City, we’ve been focused on fixing up our apartment and finding jobs and so the store has been put on the back burner for a while. We also sold most of our inventory before the move in an attempt to travel across the country with as little as possible, so we have to do more shopping for vintage treasures and stock up for you darlings! We’ll have more goodies up soon!

Speaking of looking for jobs…I found one! It’s a company called Funky Divas and they are HUGE in LA, so they’re starting up a branch here in New York. They go to birthday parties and teach the kids a fun dance routine and play games and just have an all out Pop Star extravaganza! Perfect, right? Since they are just starting out here on the east coast, they don’t have any clients yet so there are a couple of events coming up where we are going to showcase what we do during a typical party in hopes that people will absolutely love it and want to hire us. The events are in the Hamptons, and the first one is tomorrow! I have to meet my coworker at 6 am at her place in the West Village, then take a cab all the way up to 135th street to meet the director at 6:30, then drive in a zip car all the way to Bridgehampton to hopefully be there by 10 am. Then we get to spend the day doing Pop Star hair and make up for darling children, then teach them a dance routine to perform in front of their parents and the rest of the crowd. So much fun! I’ll let you all know how it goes.

Tonight we went to our beloved Apple store in SoHo, not for another technical problem but to see Regina Spektor! She was just so other-worldly and delightful and I’m really glad we got the chance to hear her. I am always blown away when an artist sounds just as good live as they do on the album and this was no exception. Her melodies are so unique and the fact that she plays the piano automatically makes me eager to hear more. Please check her out if you haven’t already HERE.

Wedding Stuff

So Green Wedding Shoes featured us on their blog again, this time with an interview from Tim! They were so excited to see our wedding pictures once the engagement photos were such a big hit, and they don’t seem disappointed in the least! Check out the feature HERE! Thanks so much Jen! We are FOREVER fans :)
Also, to all of my dear friends and readers who are planning on getting married and live in the Southern California area, or know someone who is, I have a darling friend who is trying to break into the wedding business. Nohea is an incredible singer with an angelic voice, perfect for your walk down the aisle or to set the mood before the ceremony begins. Please check her out HERE!
Thanks, everyone! xoxo

These pretzels are making me thirsty!

Every single day we walk by dozens of food carts. Coffee carts, falafel carts, nut carts, pretzel carts, smoothie carts, fruit carts. There are 3000 of them in the city and they look amazing. The other day we stocked up at a fruit stand down the street and paid only $3 for a huge bunch of grapes, three bananas, and a carton of blueberries.
Now all I want to do is make delicious recipes that have had me drooling all summer like this blueberry lemonade!
Off to go get lemons!

Furniture, Ice Cream, and a Show

I know that I’ve been pretty behind on the New York updates, but it’s really hard to sit down and blog when we’re running all around this wonderful city! When I last left you, we were celebrating the acquisition of the keys to our lovely little apartment. Since then, we’ve been traveling to Ikea and back, Target and back, Urban Outfitters and back, all the while carrying our goods up five flights of stairs and collapsing in a sweaty heap. And for some strange reason, the only Target is in Brooklyn, and the same with Ikea; so we’re also walking for blocks and blocks carrying these huge bags and boxes through the streets, onto the subway, and up the stairs to the heap. But soooooo worth it!
We’ve also found a few little treasures in our neighborhood that I am so happy about! The first is a wonderful tiny cafe called Atlas on 2nd Ave between 4th and 5th. The menu is RIDICULOUS because it is so jam-packed with awesome sandwiches, paninis, wraps, salads, pasta, burgers, pizza, breakfast, desserts, shakes, smoothies…and so much of it is vegan/vegetarian! They actually have tofu soft serve! It’s a great little place to sit out on the sidewalk patio and people watch as you eat your vegan bagel and cream cheese and sip your coffee.

The other treasure is Lula’s Sweet Apothecary which is only three blocks down on Avenue A. It’s a vegan ice cream parlor that is so delicious you won’t know what hit you. They make their own nut milk instead of using cream, and they make the most unique and amazing flavors. We went for the first time with our darling Sasha and we must have tried almost all of them! I ended up choosing Chai in a cone and it was just perfection. Their other flavors of the day included cake batter, orange creamsicle, carrot cake, mango coconut, and even green juice, which consisted of a variety of vegetables…quite interesting but not good enough to have more than a taste.

The other night we went to a bar/lou
nge in the Lower East Side called The Living Room to see a beautiful artist named Meiko play. We got there really early but it was lucky we did because we were able to get a table really close to the front. It was a very small and intimate space but there were so many people crammed in there. We were so excited to see her play because we used one of her songs for our first dance at our wedding. She played for a very pleasant 45 minutes standing up there
with just her and her guitar. She had a cellist accompany her for a few songs which made them sound so magical that I wanted to cry. There’s just something about that deep low cello that is so melancholy and moving and makes any song magnificent. Her voice was absolutely perfect and sounded exactly like it does on the album, which just awed me even more. I love seeing raw talent that doesn’t need any manipulation or fancy bells and whistles. Just a voice and a guitar. Lovely. Check out her myspace HERE. We went up to her after she played and told her how meaningful her song is for us and I sure hope that she appreciated it!
We love New York!

Happy 4th of July!

We got the keys to our apartment today!!! We weren’t able to pick them up until 7 pm so we didn’t move anything into it yet…and since we don’t have anything to sleep on there we decided to stay in the dorms for another night. Tomorrow we’ll be purchasing furniture and miscellaneous goodies to really make it feel like our home! To celebrate the occasion, New York City even put on a fireworks show JUST FOR US! They are so welcoming here! We walked over to the Hudson River to watch the show and it was just so incredible. The crowd was ridiculous and I made a promise to myself to NEVER give in to my tourist desires and go to Times Square for New Years! So sorry to everyone who is visiting but we will just have to find somewhere else in this vast city to celebrate!!!
Also I would just like to mention that my best friend Savanna Lynn and her amazing darling Andy just got engaged yesterday! She caught the bouquet at my wedding not even one month ago and now she’s planning her own beautiful celebration! Oh LIFE! I am so incredibly happy and I can’t wait to hear all of her dreams and visions for her special day.
i LOVE love!
