Christmas time is here!

We’ve hung the stockings, decorated the (miniature, NY appropriate) trees, and started listening to the holiday songs…now all that’s left to do is fill this apartment with smells of Christmas goodies baking in the oven!

Today we spent the day attempting to see Black Swan at a crowded theater, refunding our tickets and deciding on another day, eating delicious almond-crusted french toast at MUD, thrifting some really cool books to add to our (and by “our” I mean “my”) library, and trying to get my etsy shop up and running!  I have a few really great things to sell for the holidays and I hope you find them sweet enough to purchase ;)  Here is a sneak peak of the projects I’ve been working on, and hopefully the shop will be up by tonight so that you can grab your faves before they’re gone!

Here’s what I wore today…I’m loving my new knit beanie from urbs and stiletto booties from wet seal!!!

and the sweetest picture ever of my honey pie!

Over ten years has gone by…and you’re still mine.

Tim and I have been married for a little over a year, but we have actually been together for much, much longer than that.  On November 3rd, we celebrated our ten year anniversary!  Ten years ago Tim was in a band called T.H.O. and they were playing a show at The Legion Hall.  My girlfriends were there standing next to me as we were watching the boy I had a crush on play guitar and sing backups.  Then Tim came to the front of the stage, took off his sweatshirt, and on his shirt were the words “Mer, will you go out with me?” then sang a song that he had written for me…and we’ve been together ever since.

Gift giving over these past ten years has gone from extravagant scavenger hunts with little gifts at each stop to staying home and making pasta, which is absolutely lovely.  I remember in the first few years thinking, how the hell am I going to outdo what I did last year?!  Now it’s more meaningful as we sit together on the couch eating cinnamon rolls from a pillsbury can reminiscing about that night ten years ago, and all of the wonderful memories in between.  I’ve never been the type of girl to demand an expensive dinner, or a piece of jewelry…but every so often Tim sees something that he knows I will love and he’ll surprise me with it for our anniversary.  This year he gave me a GORGEOUS turquoise ring made by MidwestAlchemy on etsy, and it is just absolutely perfect!  It’s so earthy and chunky and unique, exactly the piece of jewelry that needs to be in my collection.  He knows me so well :)

I am honestly the luckiest girl in the world, and at times when I feel like life is getting me down I just remember that I have a husband who loves me, who has stuck by me through the good times and the worst times over the past ten years, and I know that we will have a lifetime of amazing adventures ahead of us.  I love you Timothy, thank you for everything. You are my world <3

California Girls love Halloween!

Hello November…nice to see you.  It seems as though you’ve brought your friends Rain and Gloom.  They weren’t really invited, but I guess they can come in.  I hear back in LA it’s 97 degrees today…I see that Sunshine and Happiness had a better party to go to.  Yes, I’m bitter…and cold.

October came and went so fast, and with it of course we added a bulk of awesomeness to the shop, got a cold that hasn’t really left, and ate way too much candy than is ever necessary.  We still have a lot of it left, and I’m actually eating a Reese’s peanut butter cup right now so I guess I don’t feel too bad about the situation.  Halloween was so much fun, we actually went to a party this year so we had to come up with super wonderful costumes.  Being a California Girl at heart, it seemed an appropriate choice to be a Katy Perry confection from her Candy Land inspired video.  I made my dress, bought a wig and some sparkly tights and et voila!  Tim decided that dressing up as a pimped out Snoop Dogg wouldn’t do…so he chose to be a vintage candy man and looked so utterly adorable that I just wanted to eat him up!  We danced the night away and had a blast :)

So long sweet summer…

I’m back in New York after my cousin’s beautiful forest fairytale wedding!  It was at this incredible ranch in North Fork, up near Yosemite National Park.  The wedding took place in the middle of a gorgeous field where we danced under the moonlight, then we moved the after party to this awesome 70s Brady Bunch ranch house complete with shag carpeting.  It was just absolutely amazing!  But of course the main attraction was my vintage beauty queen bride of a cousin who looked like she stepped right out of a bridal magazine from the 1950s.  She looked so gorgeous and I was so happy to make her veil to give her that extra special vintage touch.

We’ve hit the autumnal equinox and the changes in the weather are apparent here in New York City!  It’s been warm and sunny, with occasional chilly wind gusts…but people have been busting out the sweaters and blazers and it is amazing!  One of my favorite looks is a casual baggy sweater thrown over a pair of shorts.  It’s the perfect outfit for the transition from summer to fall.  I can’t wait to unpack all of our coats and boots and scarves and gloves and take on our second winter with open arms.

I’M BACK!!!

After a very very eventful summer, Tim and I are back in New York, ready for our final year in this crazy city!  We just moved in to our new apartment so we are living in a bit of a mess right now, and so to procrastinate on the cleaning I thought that I would post a few pictures of what I did over summer.  I realized that so much happened, from St. Tropez with the family that I work for, to celebrating our honeyversary in Palm Springs, to my best friend’s wedding, to my cousin’s bridal shower…so much going on!  So I’m going to spread out the posts over the next couple of days.

First up: South of France!

So Busty!

I encourage all of you to go buy the June/July ’10 issue of BUST Magazine (my girl Zooey is on the cover) and flip to page 15.  Or just look at these pictures :)

Sunshine warms my face and my heart

Spring has arrived!  It is here and it has smacked me right across the face with the fiercest love slap imaginable!  The sunshine, the leaves on the trees, the chirping birds, the peonies! Oh god, the peonies!  What a happy happy girl am I!

It’s been a while (story of my life) so I thought I would give an update.  This might seem a bit boring to some of you, but for people like my mom who check this thing daily to see what I’ve been up to, well this is for you :)

Two months ago I quit my job as a nanny for one family and became a nanny for another MUCH BETTER family.  Goodbye five-year old jerk who slapped me across my face on my last day…goodbye three-year old mental exhaustion who wants to play dolls all day and tell me what my doll has to say.  Hello nine-year old genius who wants to speed home from school so that she can read…hello seven-year old love bug who has the cutest laugh on the planet…hello four-year old comedienne who makes up her own hilarious stories with soundtracks to go with them.  These girls are brilliant, they are incredibly funny, they love the Beatles!  It’s a match made in heaven!

A couple weeks ago I went home to California and spent a beautiful week at home with my family.  My cousins came over and we shared beautiful conversation over delicious food…being at home is truly the best all-inclusive resort!  Thrift-store shopping (goodies in the shop SOON, I promise!), sitting on the patio around the fire, Korean spa day, delicious strawberry-rhubarb pie, questionable vegan lemon squares…heaven.

This past weekend Timmy and I went to Brooklyn for the cherry blossom festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.  Unfortunately, the flowers had already bloomed and fallen to the ground, but it was such a gorgeous day and we stayed as long as we could before the allergies started kicking in.  After the gardens we walked around the adorable neighborhood of Park Slope and bought lemonade for 50 cents from a sweet lemonade stand and shopped around in a really cool antique shop and stopped by a handmade craft fair.  All in all, a beautiful spring day!

Another really exciting thing for us is that our photography business Sweet Little Photographs is really taking off!  We got a mention on Daily Candy as well as on Green Wedding Shoes and ever since then we’ve been having trouble keeping track of our inbox!  We have a few weddings booked, many many more in the process of being booked, and lots of great conversations with wonderful clients happening.  I’ve been working on my photography skills and with a teacher like Tim pretty soon I’ll be AMAZING ;)  I am so happy with the way our life is taking shape, this is an incredible journey that I am so excited to start!

Here’s a piece of news for everyone: Tim and I will be in California for all of June and July…except for the two weeks in July that I will be in St. Tropez with the family that I work for (I TOLD you they were amazing!!!), so for all of you that wanted to come visit us in New York, you’ll have to wait until after August to do so!

The end!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I have always loved Valentine’s Day, from the elementary school days of making cards out of red construction paper and elegant white doilies to the middle school days of sending Backstreet Boys valentines…and of course all of the chocolate!  When I was a sophomore in high school, I got a bouquet of roses and some delicious goodies from my first real valentine, and every year since we have found a wonderful way to tell each other how much our love has grown.  This particular holiday has a very special meaning for us now…last year my darling proposed to me and exactly four months later we got married!  This will be our tenth Valentine’s Day together.  He is my first and only valentine <3

New Year

It is January 1st.  Isn’t that absolutely incredible?  I mean like…UNBELIEVABLE!!!  This year came and went so fast, but was filled with so many wonderful things.  I am looking forward to 2010 with all of my heart.  I have so many projects that I am going to dedicate myself to and I am going to work hard to see them come to fruition.  Here are some of my resolutions:

1. Work hard on Sweet Little Photographs and try to put ourselves out there more to build up a wonderful reputation.
2. Get going on Sugar Babies because this stuff is so cute you guys wouldn’t even believe it!
3.  Join a gym and get in shape just for the benefit of boosting my self-esteem and self-image.
4.  Be more aware of the foods I eat and how they affect my health/the world.
5.  Read more books.
6.  Take more time for myself.
7.  Smile at everyone.

This year is going to be great and I wish you all a very happy, healthy, and successful 2010 filled with love, laughter and new adventures!
